Local Urban Flexspace Solutions
The Economic Benefits a new view of the Workplace may bring
After years of scepticism, COIVID-19 has successfully changed the view of many businesses on the efficacy of remote work. As many workers rapidly took to the new conditions imposed by COVID safety - utilising home spaces and turning up digitally for their employers - businesses have come to experience the many benefits of a distributed workforce.
Global research firm Gartner estimates almost 50% of the Australian workforce will continue to work for their employers remotely, at least some of the time, post-pandemic. The effects of this will reach far further than simple employee satisfaction. The flow of business spend from larger, more populated areas to smaller cities and suburbs, is another effect that could help mitigate the economic conditions expected to be felt from the disruption that COVID has wrought.
The economic boost to smaller cities and urban areas will be a welcome one. It is often smaller cities and urban areas that bear the brunt of an economic downturn. Upwork’s analysis of remote worker earnings found that freelance workers in smaller cities were able to average around 19% higher wages than their salaried counterparts via contracts with larger businesses in bigger cities.
Increased productivity of remote workers
While Upwork’s analysis focussed only on self-employed individuals, a separate report found that a third of hiring managers found their employee’s productivity had increased as a result of remote work. Due to the positive experiences many businesses have had in off-location work, it’s likely talent pools will open up for employers and prospective employees will have access to more opportunity. This will enable people to bring investment to their local areas via their employment rather than moving away to larger cities for work opportunities.
If an inner-city head-office location is ready to downsize, the opportunity for local urban community flex workspaces is certainly set to grow. This will further cut business’ carbon footprints and distribute wealth to smaller communities. Already, executives are counting the savings to be made from a decentralized workforce. Smaller, community hub workspaces make far more sense when downsizing office space from big cities.
